hi dr.
rodney (or pygoya)
nice
to hear from you.
wish
we could have met last week. i was just kicking around after the machine was
installed.
having
a machine in new mexico would be nice.
here
are the broad strokes on hosting an art-o-mat®.....
the
art-o-mat should be viewed solely as an art installation and should not be
viewed as or compared to traditional industry/retail. artists in cellophane
was founded and is still operated by me (clark) and random volunteers and/or
modestly paid persons who support the mission of the project. artists involved
in this project understand that selling inexpensive works of art is a valid
way to entice the general public into learning more about their work and
artistic theories.
however,
there are some business aspects to the project as the host receives a
percentage of sales.
our
philosophy is to make each user experience unique. we also want our hosts to
be happy with their hosting experience for years to come. so, it is not our
intention to establish machines too close to each other (creating a saturation
point). with our conversion approach, each machine is custom created and
restored from the ground up "as art" for the specific host venue.
there is an initial hosting fee (lease) which covers installation, an initial
shipment of art, a slide talk and workshop. after that, the machine is on a
yearly review and there are no additional fees....other than purchasing art
from aic as needed. the machine should cover expenses over time. depending on
the dynamic of your community...this can be hard to predict. regardless, the
public relations aspect of the project is more rewarding for you and your
community than the percentage return from sales. some hosts choose to donate
their percentage to an arts related charity. we are seeking motivated hosts
who will stick with the project for 5 to 10+ years.
your
local artists are very much encouraged to submit work for their specific
community machine as well as for machines throughout our international
network. all work is distributed through our studio and our submission process
is posted on artomat.org. this process is set up to meet our liability
insurance and quality control needs.
each
host situation can be very different. to set up a standard "token"
operated machine can range from $4000-$5000. if we are creative and pull
resources (or if you can accept a machine that was previously on venue)...the
initial logistical costs can be reduced. i can help present the project to
your local grant organizations or private companies if necessary.
it
would be best if we spoke via phone at this point. i encourage potential hosts
to visit a machine or [if possible] plan a trip to winston-salem for a tour of
my studio and a visit to local machines.
let's
talk soon.
sincerely,
clark
